Communication for exhibition

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Hey guys, just thinking....

Should't we, as curators, have something in hand to communicate the exhibition online?

I was hoping to send some friends an email to share with them about what we've been doing and to invite them to come around on saturday night.

La Casa has produced these bright green postcards. It's cool but the information is not complete and it is not altogether.

Any ideas?

ORGANIZATION and SCHEDULE PLANING

Hola. Today we need to split the class in 2... they need the design for your exhibition vinyl immediately. Coco, can you pump out a PDF or Illustrator file today?

And Julien has the papering supplies so I need people to help in the street with testing and making sure that the photos will hold for the night.

Also, I need people to go to store and ask if it's possible to put photos in the windows just for the night... not on the windows, but inside the windows, and we can do that on Friday. I will need at least 2 people to do that today.

Be ready to go.

Guernica

2003:

from "UN conceals Picasso’s “Guernica” for Powell’s presentation" By David Walsh, February 8, 2003

"In an act with extraordinary historical resonance, United Nations officials covered up a tapestry reproduction of Pablo Picasso’s anti-war mural “Guernica” during US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s February 5 presentation of the American case for war against Iraq.

Picasso’s painting commemorates a small Basque village bombed by German forces in April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. The painter, in desolate black, white and grey, depicts a nightmarish scene of men, women, children and animals under bombardment. The twisted, writhing forms include images of a screaming mother holding a dead child, a corpse with wide-open eyes and a gored horse. Art historian Herbert Read described the work as “a cry of outrage and horror amplified by a great genius.”

The reproduction has hung outside the Security Council chamber at UN headquarters in New York since its donation by the estate of Nelson A. Rockefeller in 1985. As the council gathered to hear Powell on Wednesday, workers placed a blue curtain and flags of the council’s member countries in front of the tapestry.

UN officials claimed that the cover-up was simply a matter of creating a more effective backdrop for the television cameras. “When we do have large crowds we put the flags up and the UN logo in front of the tapestry,” asserted Stephane Dujarric. New York Newsday, however, reported that “Diplomats at the United Nations, speaking on condition they not be named, have been quoted in recent days telling journalists that they believe the United States leaned on UN officials to cover the tapestry, rather than have it in the background while Powell or other US diplomats argued for war on Iraq."

ORGANIZATION and SCHEDULE PLANING

For me before class...

Julien: 10 En La Plaza Lavapies
10:30 Solar
11 Buy Paper, tape and supplies.

Juan: 1 en La Plaza Lavapies to head to calle de la huerta del bayo 8

-----

Tila and Laura, can you please give an update on what the theater says? Because to hang a large one there will be awesome. Muchas Gracias!

And who is heading up the works in progress class exhibition?

Tomorrow can we plan out who can do the actual "papering" of the photographs on Saturday? Do you guys have any ideas other than the spots I showed you guys today? Can people come up with some suggestions for the streets with very few exhibition spots? And people must be asked if their space can be used, so if you see a good place stop and ask some one there.

Can someone please make a comprehensive list of everything that has to get done? Tomorrow we should have the schedule for the rest of the class locked down. This is going to be awesome.

Para mí, antes de la clase ...

Julien: 10 en la Plaza de Lavapiés
10:30 Solar

I know the above doesn't make much sense because it's from Google translate.

Series of the residents

And hello again... so another thing I would LOVE to do is a little series on the residents of this apartment building... I have been fascinated by it since Julien and I went there and met with the lady with all the animals. A couple of things have stuck in my mind since that first visit but the biggest one is that the neighbors seemed to come in and out of each others apartments. Also, the mix of people in that building is amazing.

If anyone has an idea of how to help me approach the residents and tell them that I want to do a series on the residents and their apartments, I would be forever in your debt. This can't happen for the exhibit, except for the slideshow, but I know I can knock the ball out of the fucking park if I could photograph there.

Muchas Gracias!
